People will look back on April 10 as the day the E & N Railway was saved. The Federal Government’s announcement of $7.5 million in funding for rails, ties and upgrades, coupled with the $7.5 million from the Province announced last June will enable passenger rail to resume and improve freight service. That will create jobs and provide economic potential for communities along Vancouver Island, and that’s good news for everyone.
It’s also a testament to what can be achieved through cooperation between all levels of government, the Island Corridor Foundation, First Nations, local communities and a diverse group of committed stakeholders. The railway has been an important part of transportation on Vancouver Island for more than 100 years, and I’m very grateful to the Provincial and Federal Governments for supporting the E & N, and providing the funding to keep it running.
